TRAINING CUM PRODUCTION CENTRE & RURAL WEAVING PROGRAMME

The Training cum Production Centre is located in the Samiti’s office. The training was imparted in handloom weaving by the Development Commissioner of Handloms, Government of Indian in 1990 and production started in its present form in the year 1991. Initially the Rashtriya Gramin Vikas Nidhi, Guwahati gave a grant to buy looms and the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) gave a building Grant. TDMS also received initial support from Oxfam India Trust and Oxfam, America.

Initially the Centre had two components – training & production. Since 1993, it has focused exclusively on production with 22 looms producing exquisite articles. When necessary, in-house training for skill development is also carried out. The Centre provides training to the rural poor and destitute women of Sonitpur District in order to make them self-reliant. There is a 2 roomed hostel accommodating 15 weavers.  Nearly 22 weavers are earning their livelihood through this project.

The center is self supporting and a concerted effort has been initiated to facilitate volume in production and upgradation of quality in order to enhance the marketability of the products. The products of this center have a brand value in the State and it has become a trendsetter in handloom products. Some of the weavers, after completion of their training have also started their own small enterprises.
