TDMS OBSERVES THE INTERNATIONAL FORTNIGHT

PROTESTING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

The TDMS observed the International Fortnight Protesting Violence Against Women (VAW) from November 25th, 2004 to 10th December, 2004. The fortnight opened in Tezpur on 25th November at the District Library. The programme was inaugurated by Mrs. Meena Agarwalla, former President, TDMS by lighting a ceremonial lamp. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. (Mrs.) L. Goswami, the Chief Guest of the inaugural function. Ms. Lina Doley, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur also spoke on the occasion.

The program comprised of rendering of poems on women's empowerment and a report on the legal aid cell of the Samiti. The major performances were a play on the theme enacted by the theatre group of the Samiti and a puppet show titled Pratiksha which was performed by the students of the Mass Communication Department of the Tezpur Central University.

Among the other advocacy mechanisms, TDMS also conceptualised and developed four sets of posters highlighting the VAW issue and distributed these in Government Offices and to the general public. The posters are depicted below. The supplementary programmes of this fortnight were street plays, open fora and a two day film festival on the theme. Key rings and bags designed on the theme were also sold at the venue.
